A year earlier on June 4, 1919, the United States Congress passed the resolution and on August 18, 1920, it was ratified. President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law on August 26, 1920. Called the Women's Suffrage Amendment, it reads: ::''The right of citizens on the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.'' It is signed by Speaker of the House, Frederick H. Gillett and by Vice President, Thomas R. Marshall.
